BiRequest NYC - 3rd Thurs Meeting - 15 Dec 2011 My dear queer friends,
If we've learned anything from the Occupiers on Wall Street and around the world, it's this:  You have to be a part of the action to make a difference.   We have to bring whatever skills, tools, and perspectives to the table and build something with them.  It's just understood that simply by taking part, skills get improved, tools are sharpened, and perspectives both deepened and widened.

The chance for the lgBtQi community to "occupy" is the annual Creating Change conference organized by the Task Force.   Every year, thousands of activists convene in a city of struggle or hope ...to learn, share, strategize and create change We're creating political & social change by empowering our communities across the country.

The Task Force is a national organization with a grass-roots vision: to empower local communities to organize and call out civic injustices for what they are. This year we convene in Baltimore, Maryland on the last week of January, 2012.

This call for volunteers is an annual rite, to be sure.  Not all of us can contribute time and resources every year. Yet this year's conference, a great proximity for activists along the eastern seaboard to make a huge impact on the proceedings.  Boston? NYC? Philly?  DC? Charlotte? Pittsburgh???   You are just a Megabus ride away.

We need volunteers to help with every aspect of the operations of the conference. From the check-in desk to the Hospitality Suites, from updating session signage to distributing and collecting session evaluations, we need everyone's contribution.

If your'e already planning to attend, as a presenter or general attendee, then consider putting a few hours aside to volunteer as well.  If you are only just learning about the conference, now's the time to reserve the dates on your calendar for at least a weekend in Baltimore.

The folks at the Task Force realize that travel costs, a few days at a hotel, and general conference admission costs can be beyond the means of members of our activist community.  So they're offering a barter for us:  Contribute 4 hours of service each day, and attend the conference at no cost.  Follow this link to sign up to volunteer for as many days as you're able to help.

One kind of contribution being coordinated for traveling activists is housing.    The Task Force and the Conference Host Committee are working to match up local members of the queer communities with out of towners. Follow this link for more information.

There is also the social networking website that supports international travelers, www.CouchSurfing.org.   Using this service, you can find folks who are members of our community, and request a couch in their homes for the time of the conference.

Either way, we'll work to make sure everyone has a safe, warm, friendly place to stay for the conference.
Don't miss out on this great opportunity for skill building and networking to build our movement.
